Robert Mapplethorpe

We spent the weekend in Skanderborg in Jutland and among other things we visited the art museum Aros in Aarhus and saw an exhibit called Living on the edge by the photographer Robert Mapplethorpe. Before we got there, I had never heard of him and I was, to put it mildly, pleasently surprised by the exhibit. His artwork is absoulutly stunning and beautiful, where it is mainly black and white photographs featuring the human body in all it's glory, sculptures, flowers and portraits of famous individuals. Mapplethorpe did have a reputation of being controversial and shocking in his work, especially his photograps of the gay and s/m community in New York in the 1970's. Despite his controversies, the quality in his work, the framing, lighting and the capture of the beauty of the subjects in his photos is what I felt in love with. Here are some of my favorite photographs form the exibit, which I found online.
